What on earth has Christianity got to do with the environment?

Welcome to the environment pages for Holy Trinity. These pages are the start of a hopefully fruitful resource for what we, who call ourselves Christians, could and should be doing to care for the world that we live in. I’m no theologian—just a ‘green’ Christian who thinks deeply about the impact that my actions have on the world around me, and my ‘neighbours’, both near and far.

1 Corinthians 10: 26 (NIV)

The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.

God’s Earth
I believe that the authority God has given us to ‘rule’ over the earth (Genesis 1:26), is intended to be one of delegated ‘tenancy’ ruling,  as it is clearly stated in 1 Corinthians that it is HIS world He has put us in charge of. He has not given it to us to destroy, but rather to tend and to care for on his behalf.

Good tenants
God may have given us dominion over his earth, but we should do so as responsible Christians, not squandering its resources for personal gain.

The science of climate change is now too convincing to ignore; we have a God-given responsibility, to all creation, to take action  before it is too late.

Genesis 1: 26 (NIV)

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Love thy neighbour
This is perhaps the strongest reason of all as to why we should care about the environment; it is home to Bangladeshi coastal dwellers and rural Ethiopians as much as it is to us, yet the way WE live is damaging their livelihoods, if not threatening their very survival. So, read on to find out how YOU can help.
